Landau Gage/Remark Farms Support

Landau Gage Inc. will be assisting our team this year with manufacturing our steering rack as well as CMM measuring some parts for our vehicle.

Also we have received a donation from Remarks Farms, as they will be supplying our team with both penne and spaghetti for our pasta dinner which will be held in a few weeks at the Fogular Furlan Dinner.

We will have our 2006 Baja Car on display at the Fogular for this event so that our visitors can view, ask questions and see what a Baja Car is.

Fogular Furlan

Lots of things have been going on over the past couple of months. We have already completed building our frame at Centerline and we have taken this back to the school. Currently we are working on putting tabs onto our frame. We have been able to put together our first transmission assembly and we look to shortly couple this to an engine and run some trials/testing on it using the 2006 car.

Our team has also decided that we would like to have another dinner event to help raise additional funding to help support our team. This will be our third dinner event. We current have set aside March 14th 2007 at the Fogular Furlan Club. More details to follow for this event in near future. We will be looking into bringing a car to show at the event. As well as 50/50 draw, door and raffle prizes should also be available.

Frame/A-Arm Manufacture

This year we will be manufacturing our Frame at Centerline of Windsor Limted Special Machinery Division, begining the week of December 18th. The majority of our first week will be spent taking care of safety training for equipment and becoming familiarized with the facility. We will start manufacturing in early January with the assistance of Dan Pomainville. Once our Frame and Exterior Body are both constructed they will both be painted at Ron's Custom Collision. The design of our double A-Arms will be complted soon and they will then be manufactured at Valient.

Update

Lots has been going on over the past month. We have been really busy as we have been able to get our sponsorship packages printed off and completed. Wheeler's Priting and Imaging has agreed to assist us in printing our sponsorship packages.

We have also been working on several iterations to design our frame and our suspension points. We just recently recieved our engine from SAE. We will be working on our transmission design more extensively in the following weeks as that just arrived as well.

Multiple designs are in the making for our shifter and cuting break design, as well as our half shafts and double a-arms. This weekend we intend to perpare a mock up using PVC conduit. We have made several mock ups thus far with simple small straw models to aid us in our weekly team meetings. Straw models can be simple yet effective.

Go Engineering Girl/Convocation/Open House

On October 14th 2006th the University of Windsor will be holding its Convocation which will focus on celebrating the graduation of this years 2006 Engineering students.

The CARE building will be very busy on this day starting at 11am with Go Engineering Girl which provides female students in grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 a chance to attend the University of Windsor with their Parents and talk with faculty and current students. For more details see the following link.

Officially Signed Up Vehicle 38

Dear U of W Baja Fans,

On October 2nd 2006 just after 10am Bill Bombardier signed our team up for the BAJA RIT competition which will take place from June 7th to 10th 2007. This year our vehicle will be car number 38. For those of you whom didn't know the vehicle numbers 1 to 10 are assigned to vehicles whom finished in the top ten last year and the vehicles numbers above 10 area assigned in the order in which people signed up for the competition.

U of W Testing

Herman and Wade have been working hard on the fixing the 2005 Senior Vehicle which has a CVT. Due to rainy conditions powerband was ruled out for testing and we instead got a few people into the 2005 Senior car at the U of W. After hearing a few sweaks and squeels it was discovered that the right front rotor was not bolted. After fixing this issue and cleaning out the 2006 transmission on Saturday September 23rd 2006 we will use both vehicles and test them with the G-tech to gather some vehicle dynamics data. Testing will occur at CARE from 10am till 2pm. Come out and see what's going on if your interested.

On Thursday September 21st 2006 we will take the vehicles to Powerband for testing. Our main goal from this trip is to better understand how the vehicle handles and what we can do to improve the vehicle as a whole. Departure time approximately 4pm/4:30pm.

First Official Baja Meeting & Hogback Hill

Also I was reading up on the RIT competition and its endurance race will be taking place at Hogback Hill Motocross track. There is a video of the track if you would like to take a look. "The track will have some obstacles (logs, rocks & mud) along the track but 75% will be motorcross style." posted on the RIT forum by the Cheif of the Dynamic events.

If you need to do some research you can do so by using this data base called Engineering Village "added to link on left of this page". Through this website you can download serval engineering journals. You can access this website while at unversity or while at home. To log in you will need your student card. Below the barcode you will see a number Ex. 2186########## . This number will be your ID and the password will be your last name.

Once you gain access to the database i would suggest to use quick search and then input your subject/topic. When the results return you can download pdf files of journals that state full text. To do this click "get it" a new page will load on this page under the full text section click "go" and look for a link to download the pdf file on the new page.

Note: if you click on Leddy Libary "also in our quick links on the left" you can search for articles in alternative ways by browsing by journal, title, subject... this will be on the left of the Leddy Libary page.

Powertrain Ideas

Over that past few weeks I have looked for some information on varoius transmission ideas and concepts and found these following websites interesting.

ZeroShift

ZeroShift is a type of hydraulically operated manual transmission which has high efficiency when shifting comparied to common manual transmissions since it allows for instantaneous shifting without torque loss.

Lestran IVT Official Product Website

The above website it the actual website for the Lestran IVT. You can find lots of information reguarding this new type of transmission which has an efficiency near 98%. The IVT uses reciprocated masses to vary torque output.

Lestran IVT by Dalhousie University

The above website is from Dalhousie University as they have been using the IVT on their Baja cars in years past.

Week Off

For those whom are interested during the week off (the week of June 26 2006) we have talked to Mike and got approval to go in to CARE at 8:30am till 4:30pm each day to work on a bench test station to generate a horsepower vs speed curve. We will also attempt to run the test using a manual and CVT transmission. If there is anything else that you would like to learn about feel free to let us know.

Clutch Ideas

I accidently stumbled upon a few websites on small horse power application clutches, more specifically inertial clutches and thought that it would be a good idea to share this with the drivetrain team. Apparantly there are 5 main types of clutches;

1) Jaw or Tooth clutches
2) Friction clutches
3) Over-Running Clutches
4) Torque Limiting Clutches
5) Other various clutches

I found a few sites on info on a type of friction clutch called a centrifugal clutch. It applies less shock to the actual engine when shifting and can be adjusted to meet our applications and it seems to be available for engines around our 10 hp range. These sites are:

SEED - A general site for engineering design guides. Has a lot of information that will definately help us in terms of design. NOT JUST FOR CLUTCHES.

Types of Clutches - Within SEED site. Has info on types of clutches.

National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) Info on Centrifugal Clutches

Comet Industries - Manufacturer for aftermarket clutches and torque converters for small vehicle (snowmobile, atv, go-cart, lawnmower) application.

And that's it. Enjoy!

I strongly suggest looking into a fluid coupling as a possible clutch. I'm not sure if it would suit or purposes but the fact that it can be up to 99% efficient definately makes it something to consider.

Part Suppliers

Over my co-op term I have purchased several parts for simple design projects that I have worked on from Carrlane. On their website you can view their catalogue online and then download a 3D cad version of the part. I was thinking of possibly purchasing a push/pull toggle clamp for our cutting brake from Carrlane. Another supplier would be McMaster Carr they have a huge selection of various parts however you can't download CAD models, but you can view general information on the part.

3D Part Downloads

If you visit www.cadregister.com you can have access to several different parts/products which can be downloaded and used( IE. motors, switches, brushes, belts, sprockets, gears...). Another source is www.3dcontentcentral.com which provides a similar type of service but requires a login which is free.

I would like to thank all those who purchased tickets or donated prizes. I would also like to thank everyone who was able to make it out to the Knights of Columbus Hall in Amherstburg on a night that had potential to be very snowy. Because of all those whom came out to support us it made our very first Pasta Dinner Event a Huge Success.

As for the team members I think everyone worked really good together. Each member was always there to help out anywhere help was required. And mostly I would like to thank Stephanie Masse for all her hard work with organzing this Pasta Dinner. Dylan produced a great video that summed up Mini Baja in a quick 3 minutes and this will shortly be available on our website in mp4 format.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Pasta Dinner as much as I did.

Pasta Dinner:
• Steph has come up with a list of tasks for the Pasta dinner that explains who’s is doing what at the fundraiser. The list should be posted by her soon.
• The tickets have been printed and all team members will try to sell as many as they can.
• Ahmad will make a flyer and send it to all team members as soon as possible.
• The 4th year team will help us sell tickets; For every ticket sold by the 4th years we will give them $4.
• It was decided that the price for the tickets is $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
• Dr. Minaker, Dr. Gaspar, Dr. Frise, Mr. Bruce Durfy and Mr. Mike Charron will be invited to the pasta dinner.
• Dylan will edit a promotion video that will be playing during the pasta dinner. A short 2 min promo as well as an extended video which will be played continually for visitors to view as they please.
• Last year’s Baja car will be displayed out side the at the front door if approval is recieved from the U of W.
• There will be a 50/50, Mini Put Game and raffles for prizes.
• Herman will make a list of songs to be played during the event.

Donations:
• The donation letter has to be edited and revised.
• The team will split into groups and try to get donations from different businesses, raffle prizes and food.
• A Thank you letter must be sent to any business that donates to our team.

Team Meeting #3 Summary

This is a summary of what was discussed during our 3rd team meeting:

Pasta Dinner:

• It was decided that a pasta dinner event will be used to raise money for the team.
• Steph has come up with the booklet that shows the cost and revenue for the pasta dinner. The booklet was emailed to everyone on the team.
• All team members agreed that November 23rd is an appropriate date for the pasta dinner.
• Each team member has to sell as many tickets as possible.
• Bill will come up with a design for the tickets and Steph will print the tickets..
• Team members will split in groups and help host the event.
• Donation letters have to be written to different businesses in order to get food supplies donations.
• Kamil has volunteered to write up the donation letters.

• The Ratification forms were completed and submitted last week by Bill and Chris.

Power Band Testing/ Directions With Map

For some of us this was our first outing to Power Band or you can even say our first Baja outing. After packing all the parts up and the two cars, we departed from the school between 3:30 and 4pm. On the drive some of us stopped for a bite to eat (nothing like subway on the run). When we arrived at Power Band despite having directions and all we some how still managed to have difficultly locating Power Band. Personally I drove right by the Road 3 West... it was after driving by the road that I realized which road we just passed. Herman did happen to make the right turn however. We then proceeded down Road 3 west only to find Herman and Bill take a different detour. They looked a little lost so we had to pull in to advise them of their wrong turn... They said they stopped there cause they knew those people... So as expected we had a bit of fun along our travels after all the slight detours we eventually did make it to Power band to meet up with the rest of the team. Turns out we heard stories of past experiences on tracking down Power Band turns out we were not the first to miss it. So to save the hassle down the road enjoy the directions below as well as the link to a google map.

10.	Turn left at Road 3 W - go 1.4 km (Keep and Eye out for a First Choice Renovations sign Address 1683 Road 3 West, located on the right hand side of the road. Take the first right when heading down the driveway.)

Testing was fun. We managed to get some good action shots of the cars with a photographer. He also took a picture of the group next to the cars. We happened to break a tie rod on the red car (about our third jump). We also happened to break the shifter making it impossible for the driver of the yellow car to switch gears. We managed to just drive the car in 4th gear for the time being. After that we borrowed a tie rod off the yellow car since we didn't have the proper tie rods present for the red car. This allowed us to conclude most of our testing. After packing up the cars Dylan and a friend put on a pretty good motocross demonstration for team members. It was very impressive. By 9pm we had the cars back to the shop cleaned up and put away. Note made... consider looking into tie rod designs and gear shifter designs. These could be areas of possible improvements.

Mini Baja East Competition

The East Mini Baja competition differs from the others mainly due to the fact that the car must be able to float on water as well as propel itself through the water. In relation to the courses, this means that at certain points during a race, the driver will encounter a pond or other large area of deep water which they must be able to traverse across without difficulty or damage to the car. This obviously presents a big challenge from an engineering point of view. The car must be designed to handle the off-road conditions of the track as well as be amphibious. Obviously some sort of floatation device must be incorporated into the design, as well as a propulsion mechanism to allow the car to move across the water.

Mini Baja cars competing in this competition must follow certain design specifications laid out by SAE for the purposes of safety as well as fairness. For a breakdown of the rules and regulations pertaining to this competition, click here.

This year the East competition is taking place in Auburn, Alabama during April 12-15, 2006. Our team decided not to visit this competition this year due mainly to high travel costs. For the 2007 competition year we have decided to focus on the Midwest competition since our school has more experience with Midwest. We have not ruled out participation in the East competition, but for now we will focus most of our efforts on Midwest, while still keeping the East option open. We may be driving on water yet!

MIDWEST Competition

The 2007 University of Windsor Midwest Mini Baja team will be participating in the competition to be held in Troy, Ohio in June of the same year. The competition is judged on a points system, with a total of 1000 points possible. The 1000 points are divided into two principal categories: static events and dynamics events. In the static events category, the judging evaluates overall vehicle design based on team reports and presentations worth a total of 300 points. The remaining 700 points are made available in the dynamic events, in which the vehicles are tested on acceleration, top speed, hill climbing, hauling capacity, maneuverability, and an intense four-hour head-to-head endurance race.

Power Band

This Wednesday (October 5th, 2005) the fourth year team is taking the baja cars out for testing. They are taking them to the Power Band. I encourage our team to join them so we can get some experience with the car and the atmosphere. We can meet at the CARE building at 4pm, and we can car pool there. Catia Tutorials

Hey guys (and girls),

Before you all go out and spend a fortune on Catia books, I found a couple of ebooks that might be helpful. I haven't really looked through them too much, but they seem to be somewhat useful. One is more basic while the other is more advanced. The first one is "Catia V5 Workbook Release 6 & 7" and the other is "Advanced Catia V5 Workbook Releases 8 & ". I sent everyone an email with these files attached. If you didn't recieve it, let me know. I'll try to see if I can find some more ebooks and/or some cheap hard copy books online as well. But check these out, I think they may be the same as the books you guys were talking about and this is a free alternative. (I like free stuff)

PS: Let me know if you guys have problems downloading the attachments, they're not that big, so there shouldn't be a problem. Also, if anyone wants a gmail account, I can send you an invite, I have a ton. You get like over 2Gb of online storage space which is useful for files like this.

Meeting

Today in our meeting we discussed many issues. We’ve come to the conclusion that it’ll cost our team approximately $3700-3900 to go to the competition this year which is held in Milwaukee from May 24-27. We’ve decided that we’re going to go to the event on the 23 and come back from the event on the 28th of May. We will pass this by the 4th year team at a later time. Bishoy talked about his findings on having a Bar-b-Que and a Bingo. If we get our team ratified we can have a Bar-b-Que on campus and it will only cost us $75 to rent the equipment, however there is a $300 deposit required. Bishoy is going to further look into having a Bar-b-Que before the end of October.

Steph found some information about having a bingo. She found that is necessary to be a charity group and that we have to obtain a license from city hall in order to run a Bingo. Steph is going to further find information about obtaining a license. We then discussed our website, and how Pete has started the development of it.

Chris will contact the IT services about the possibility of adding documents to the website. We discussed how our team is going about ratification and everyone got a chance to look at the documentation. Being a ratified club will offer many advantages for the team. Some of these include the following: it offers us an insurance policy for out of town events, gives us free access to rooms at the University, and allows us to hold fundraisers on campus.

We also discussed, that it is a good idea for everyone to learn CATIA at this stage, therefore a few members of our team will purchase some books, and these books can be shared amongst the team. If you wish to purchase a book, please see the links in the link section. For our website we are going to need some information to be filled out for some particular areas of the website.

CATIA V5

Ahmad has done some research and he has found two excellent books on CATIA. Both these books are linked in the links section. The book in the CATIA intro book link is a book that introduces you to CATIA; it is a beginner’s book. The book in the FEA using CATIA link is a book that intrudes finite element analysis using CATIA. This book was written by Dr. Zamani who is a professor at our University.

Ratification/ Web Update

Currently we are putting together all documentation to submit to the UWSA to ratify our team. The plan is to have ratification sheets submitted by the early next week.

Today we recieved our login id for the website and we will soon begin to upload our website. Which is currently under construction. The content layout has been put together, graphics (buttons and and animations) are currently under construction as well. Look for more updates soon.

Tonight we will be attending the 4th year weekly meeting at 5:30pm.

Ratification and Meeting with Victoria

Yesterday Chris and I had a meeting with the fourth year team captain Victoria and one of their team members. We discussed a few topics with them, and took a lot of advice from them. We've decided that this year will be a learning experience for our team. We're going to be able to learn a lot from our mentors as to how to stay organize and on track, and we are going to learn a lot about the specifics of the car.

We are hoping to get some fundraising done this year, so we can get started on Research and Development early in the season next year. We hope to do a few fundraisers this year, however in order to do any fundraisers on campus our team has to be ratified. There are some ups and downs about being ratified (please see UWSA club forms). I am going to go find out more information on getting our team ratified early this week before our next meeting (Wednesday at 10:30am).

The 4th Year Team -- > Our Mentors

The current plan for this year will not be to build a car of our own. But instead we will focus on assisting the 4th year team. While assisting the 4th year team we look to gain as much knowledge as possible on the components of the car (shocks, cvt, breaks, frame... etc). We feel that gaining this knowledge will prove to be very valuable to us next year. Another very useful skill which we look to hone is our tallent to fully utilize CATIA and ADAMS software. Being able to use these programs can provide one less thing to stress over next year during our full scale project of car designing and building. This will hopefully free up more time for testing next year.

The 4th year team meets on Tuesdays at 5:30pm in the Care Building. All team members are encouraged to attend. One of the main topics on the agenda for Sept 27th is believed to be sponsors/fundrasing.

A New Logo On The Way

Just recently I began a design of a new logo. The rough draft has been sketched and Stephanie Masse has applied some coloring by color pencil. You can see this logo on the right as it has been scaned. Today the new design was reviewed by the team and some suggestions were made. Peter Denzinger has recieved a copy of the concept logo and will be editing it in adobe photoshop. He will also look to improve the design.

The Begining of Something New

This Mini Baja Team is looking to gain experience this year. We look to build something new as a team, but by reusing as many parts as possible from previous designs. As a team one of our goals for this year is to gain an understanding of the mini baja compeition and the parts used on the cars. Next year when we enter our 4th year we will be designing a Mini Baja car for our capstone project and we look at this 3rd year challenge as a way to grow and prepare for our 4th year design project.
